* Dublin Marathon - Adam Leahy - We should also announce that Adam Leahy is going to run the Dublin City Marathon for Ash on the 29th October 2007. About a year and a half ago Adam saw a beautiful young Staffie loose in the street trailer a brand-new lead, not damaged or dirty and thought that the owner wouldn't be far behind. No such luck though and then reality struck, truth of the matter is that it might prove very difficult to find a safe place for a dog where it won't be put to sleep after a short 5 days and where it can be taken in now. (not always possible, such is the pressure) Long story short, Staffie came to Ash, we searched long and hard and took him to tv3 Ireland am, but no owner was found so we eventually found him a great new home with an other family. Adam, who is now 23 years old, always wanted to run the Dublin City Marathon (even if it will be a once off, or so he says) and he started his training 11 months ago and is now confident he will be well able for it. In the mean time he did not forget about the dog or about Ash and he kindly offered to seek sponsorship in aid of the sanctuary. With the Marathon only 4 weeks away it is time we all show our admiration for his effort as well as donate some desperately needed cash for our animals. The summer has been tough on us and much maintenance etc. hasn't progressed the way we would have wanted it. Some things are very urgent and need to be done before the winter weather strikes and leaves us and the animals exposed. Not getting any funds is a real threat and we all hope for a huge and generous response. Come on send a donation to:

The Hardy Appeal

The above picture shows Hardy's good side. Other images can be seen by clicking the links below- warning - they are VERY graphic. Image 2, image 3, image 4, image 5, image 6.

Saturday night around 8.30 we got a call from our next door neighbours to say they had picked up a little dog that was walking down the road and that they hadn't seen before. They never said anything about an injury, frankly I think because they were in shock. It looked far worse then, more infected and the smell was terrible as well. When Remi came there they asked him to please give him a chance and see could he be helped, they offered to help financially. I know though that they are poor enough people and wouldn't have a fortune to spend. We rang our vet and Lorna, who was on call attended to him, she was very upset about it and said that all she could do would be give antibiotics and painkillers.

On Sunday morning we rang the Mirror as we realised that his vet bills would by far exceed our means, they ran the story with a black and white picture as they felt that the colour pictures were too graphic.

On Tuesday morning we made an appointment for Pete Wedderburn to see him and the news was good and bad, Pete said that this would be way beyond what any private vet could take on, as round the clock care would be needed for a number of weeks, the good news is that all of it is repairable at a cost, the alternative would be to euthanise him. So we decided that we would have to go for it, it would be too ironic if Hardy had survived 2-3 months without treatment to finally get into a rescue centre and then to be pts. Not an option by my book. He is the most patient dog ever and absolutely adorable.

Pete discussed his injuries with the vets in the college and they think that a minimum of 3 operations will be needed and a maximum of 8, all depending on how successful they are. They also think that it will be October before he will be ready to start the rest of his life.

Hardy is going into the hospital on Monday morning 9am.

The treatment to save Hardy will cost many thousands of Euro, can you please find it in your heart to help us ? ... please click here to donate online.

2003...

November Dinner 2003 - The organisers of the ASH animal sanctuary dinner and entertainment evening held in the Heather House Hotel last Thursday were thrilled with the result of months of planning and organising as the evening was a huge success. The guests were treated to a sumptuous meal followed by irish dancing, comedy and music to dance to, keeping them fully entertained. The big raffle draw was a comedy act in itself as Pauline McLynn (Mrs Doyle from Father Ted) drew the winning tickets and had everybody in stitches of laughter. Our sincere thanks to the entertainers, everybody to donated prizes to our raffle making it so successful and of course to Pauline McLynn.

Pauline who is a devoted animal lover was happy to give her support to ASH as she feels very strongly about animal welfare. Because of her heavy work schedule, Pauline and her husband have only got cats at the moment but when the time is right she will certainly be on the lookout for a rescue dog or two.We would like to thank all the staff of the Heather House Hotel for helping to make the night run as smoothly as it did, in particular to Donal who even under pressure remained calm and nothing was too much trouble. As this is the last fundraising event for 2003 for ASH (apart from Christmas cards which can be obtained by phoning Heather at 2875347), thanks must go to the National Garden Centre, Kilquade for their generosity and support, People Newspapers for invaluable publicity, irishanimals.com for advertising events on the website and for being responsible for hundreds of animals finding new homes, and to all the people who have supported and contributed to ASH during 2003. Without the backing of the general public, ASH and similar animal welfare societies just simply couldn't exist as fundraising plays a vital role in their survival.

The most rewarding thing to come from such an event as the dinner is to see a room full of people enjoying themselves knowing that compassion to animals and their welfare is the real reason they are there. Thank you.

A fun bingo night took place in the Heather House Hotel in Bray at the end of October '03. Eyes went down at 7.30pm and we had a lot of fun .. many thanks to all who came along and supported the sanctuary.Glendalough sponsored dogwalk, 2003 - the sun shone on a wonderful day in the foothills of the Wicklow mountains today! ... we brought 12 of the dogs from the sanctuary and people also brought their own dogs. We were quite a sight as we walked what seemed like an endless train of dogs all around this beautiful area. Many thanks to all our supporters - a great day was had by all and some badly needed funds were raised. Click here to see pictures from the walk !Fun Dogshow, 2003 - we had a delightful day out at our first annual ASH "Fun dogshow" at the Greystones Summer Festival. We had over 150 entries across the various classes and everyone of these wonderful dogs was a winner in their own right. Click here to see photos from the show!Art Exhibition 2003 in the Community Centre, Bray, Road, Enniskerry. The exhibition was really a great success - there were some wonderful pictures and many people came out to support ASH - we thank you all so very much.
